As of today, I have 18 days before I have to be back at school and 27 days before the students come back. For those that don't know, I teach English to ninth and eleventh graders. Teaching is hard, but I love it. I’ll do a post or two later on the state of our educational system, but that isn’t was this is about right now.
Going back to school after chilling a lot over the summer is difficult. So rather than focusing on getting up at 5:45 AM, bad kids, tons of paperwork, and lesson plans, I want to focus on the positives of education. Tell me about your favorite teacher and why he or she was your favorite. What did that teacher do that set him/her apart from your other teachers. In your opinion, what makes a great teacher great? Or, tell me about a positive experience you had at school with a teacher, administrator, janitor, counselor, cafeteria worker, coach, etc. Basically, tell me sumin good!!!

Limited, I know I've told you this story before, but I'll tell it again. The teacher that really motivated me for a lifetime was my 8th grade social studies teacher. For one, he always called me "Little Malcolm" because I reminded him of Malcolm X. Second, he introduced me to public speaking and oratory. Finally, he told me that one day I'd put Wilson on the map. I'm still working on that one.
That's funny KB, considering that Malcolm's birth name was Malcolm Little.
I was in DC last week and I had lunch with my AP Calculus teacher - one of a handful of teachers who literrally changed my life. It was great for both of us on so many levels.
You all are REALLY creating the change you want to see. You might not be able to see it now, but know that you are.
I had a few teachers that really encouraged me:
*Mrs. Robinson, who taught me 3rd and 4th grade. She challenged me and encouraged me. Gave me extra work and pushed me far beyond where I thought I could be.
*Mr.Smithson and Mr. Kuntzelman, who taught me 8th grade social studies and science respectively. They were so passionate about the subject matter and conveyed such an awesome level of respect to the students.
*Ms. Hudson and Dr. Boarman, my HS guidance counselor and school president at NCSSM. They truly believed in working for the students and if it weren't for them, I probably wouldn't have graduated.
I hope that when I (eventually) make my way into the classroom, I can be inspiring and motivating to students like the aforementioned teachers/administrators were to me.
Ronda, I remember talking to you during my student-teaching experience and you really said something that encouraged me and changed my perspective on teaching. I know you're an awesome teacher- thanks for being a great role model also.
